James review
James
The one I pressed on people. They came back quieter.
9/104.6 / 5
James, by Percival Everett, has the sort of reviews that are unusually agreed. People finish it and hand it on. It retells a story you think you know, and it is sharper than that description. I pressed it on people. They came back quieter. The praise is the voice, the anger, and how readable it stays. The reservations are few. A handful of reviews wanted more time in one part, or knew the source book too well and spent the pages comparing. I did not need the comparison. It stands up on its own.

For
- Hard to put down.
- The voice is the book.
- People I lent it to actually read it.
Against
- If you want comfort, this is not it.
- Readers of the source book may spend it comparing.
- The paperback is the one to lend. The hardback is heavier than the story needs.
